Green Giraffe advised Pika Energy on its partnership with Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners to build a 20-plant biomethane platform in Italy
Pika Energy and HBA contributed their combined development pipeline to a newly formed company, Via Verde, backed by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners through its Advanced Bioenergy Fund II. Via Verde operates with its own team to take the projects through to final investment decision, with CIP acquiring each project as it clears due diligence and demonstrates a clear path to FID.
The platform comprises 20 projects across Lombardy, Abruzzo, Campania and other Italian regions. Each plant is expected to process 60,000 to 100,000 tonnes of agricultural waste a year. Once all 20 are operational, Via Verde will deliver approximately 1 TWh of biomethane annually, equivalent to the annual gas consumption of around 60,000 Italian households.
The partnership gives Pika Energy a funded route to market and gives CIP a ready-made development platform in one of Europe’s fastest-growing biomethane markets. It is Green Giraffe Advisory’s second biomethane closing of the year.

A development equity raise for a 1+ GW electrolyser project being built on the site of a decommissioned nuclear power plant in Lubmin, Germany. The project is in an early stage of development and needed a co-investor to fund upcoming development expenses.
Project Faraday was a development equity raise for an early-stage electrolyser project located in Lubmin, along Germany’s Baltic Sea coast.
The project will be constructed in phases on the site of a decommissioned nuclear power plant and have direct access to Germany’s H2 backbone infrastructure. The first phase comprises 210 MW of capacity, and eventually the project will reach 1,050 MW.
Much of the planned development expenses for the whole project (i.e. the full 1+ GW) will be borne during the first phases of the project and PtX Development needed a partner to help fund these expenses.
Thus, the objective of the mandate was to find such a partner to help PtX Development advance the project and bring one of Germany’s key H2 project one step closer to completion.
GGA was pleased to have support our client in identifying KGAL GmbH & Co as the most suitable partner to bring this forward.

GGA advised on the debt and equity raise for the hybrid Oya project in South Africa.
Green Giraffe Advisory was mandated as exclusive financial advisor to raise debt and equity for the Oya project. This was following on from its support in the successful bid in the Risk Mitigation Independent Power Producers Programme (RMIPPPP), where Oya was awarded a 20-year PPA with Eskom in 2021.
The Oya project is a 128 MW co-located hybrid project straddling the Western and Northern Cape provinces in South Africa that consists of a mix of onshore wind turbines (86 MW), bi-facial solar PV arrays (155 MWp), lithium-ion battery storage (94MW/242MWh) and a unique hybrid controller supplying dispatchable baseload power during daytime hours, thus making it one of the biggest hybrid projects of its kind in the world. The landmark project will be instrumental in South Africa’s transition to a renewable energy power mix and in reducing load shedding.
Green Giraffe Advisory is proud to have supported this complex and innovative Oya project and its leading sponsors G7 Renewable Energies, a local developer, and Engie, a multinational utility company, since the tender bid submission phase in 2020 and to have delivered its full suite of fundraising services all the way up to financial close achieved on February 13th 2024.
Equity was raised from Engie and Meadows Energy and Perpetua as B-BBEE investors and a highly competitive debt package was raised from RMB (as MLA), DBSA, OMAI, Sanlam and Stanlib.

Green Giraffe is supporting Offshore Service Facilities in developing an iconic artificial island in the Dutch North Sea. The aim of the energy island is to stimulate multifunctionality in the North Sea and to facilitate and accelerate the energy transition. Green Giraffe advised Windpark Fryslân on the EUR 700 M debt raise for the 383 MW nearshore wind farm in the IJsselmeer
Green Giraffe provided financial advisory services to Windpark Fryslân (WPF) for the development of the 383 MW nearshore wind farm in the IJselmeer. The project reached financial close on 1 October 2019. Senior debt of around EUR 700 M was provided by a lenders group of 10 banks consisting of ABN AMRO, BNG, BNP Paribas, DZ Bank, Helaba, ING, KBC, KfW IPEX, NWB and Rabobank.
On reaching financial close the province of Fryslân stepped in as a shareholder with a total investment of EUR 100 M. After construction, they will give inhabitants of the province the opportunity to invest in the windfarm through bonds.
Once operational in 2021, the project will be the world’s largest windfarm on a lake. This is another milestone in the lake’s interesting history: the former complex of lakes was flooded by the North Sea, then later closed off again by a 32-kilometer dam and partly drained to create an entire new province with fertile farmland. The area will now additionally supply 383 MW of electricity per year, enough for 500,000 households and 70% of the province of Friesland’s wind energy target. The wind turbines will be located just south of the long dam called Afsluitdijk. The project includes the construction of a nature island further along the Afsluitdijk. The island will be a resting and foraging area for birds and fish. During the construction of the project it may be used as work island.

Green Giraffe advised on the sale of Absaroka's 400 MW Gordon Butte pumped storage hydro project in Montana, USA, successfully closing the transaction with a European investment fund
Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, through Copenhagen Infrastructure III K/S, acquired an equity interest in Absaroka Energy’s pumped storage hydro energy project in Montana, USA. The 400 MW Gordon Butte Pumped Storage Project represents a carbon-neutral way to help balance the grid in the Pacific Northwest and will be the first new pumped storage project developed in the US in 30 years. Green Giraffe co-advised on the transaction, which reached financial close in June 2019.
The Gordon Butte project is sited in Meagher County, located about three miles west of Martinsdale and less than six miles from its interconnection to the Colstrip twin 500 kV transmission lines, the backbone of the Pacific Northwest’s electric system. This interconnection location will give the facility access to markets in Montana and throughout the region. The project will have minimal environmental impact due in large part to the closed loop nature of the siting and design thus taking the facility out of an existing stream or water impoundment. Capital expenditures to build and operate the project will inject meaningful resources into the state and local economy.
