The liberalisation of the electricity market in South Africa

Energy security in South Africa, 8 March 2024

Green Giraffe Advisory (“Green Giraffe”), organised a breakfast panel event on South Africa Energy. The title of the discussion was “Exploring the impact of the liberalisation of the electricity market on the financing of renewable energy projects in South Africa“. It took place on 7th March 2024 in Cape Town International Convention Center, South Africa.

This event was set up to highlight the successes and challenges facing the current market transition in the country, with a focus on some landmark deals, financing developments and market reforms that have shaped the recent trajectory of the energy sector.

This in-person seminar brought together IPP players, lenders, advisors and regulatory bodies in one room to have rigorous discussion on prevailing market dynamics and those playing a critical role in the energy transition. We had great discussions about this recent market development and how it has reshaped the dynamics of production and the sale of renewable energy, as well as the challenges and opportunities for the different stakeholders involved in those projects.

We had four speakers, all of them expert professionals in the industry:

  • Verena Bougeant (Giese) – EDF Renewables (South Africa) Head of Investment SA
  • Franca Sandham – Investec Project Finance Director
  • Chanda Nxumalo – Harmattan Renewables Managing Director
  • Alexandra Cluver – Allen & Overy Partner

The full scope of Green Giraffe services, including M&A, debt advisory, capital raising, development and tender support, financial modelling, PPA structuring and strategic support, will be offered across all renewable and energy transition technologies, including solar, onshore wind, offshore wind, energy storage, grid solutions, bioenergy, and green hydrogen.

Frederico Sanches, Head of the Cape Town office, says: “We are very pleased to have hosted market leaders to discuss the future of the energy market in South Africa”

Inès Pinot de Villechenon of Green Giraffe who organised the content session says: “This is exciting discussion as it presents opportunities for many involved in the South African electricity sector, and as Green Giraffe Advisory we are excited to think about where that can lead us all in the next 5 years, 10 years, and beyond. At Green Giraffe we are committed to providing our full range of services to support the green energy transition of Africa and South Africa in particular.”

The panel was also organised the day before the International Women’s Day and Green Giraffe was very happy to have four powerful, inspiring, and influential women panellists around the table, sharing as closing remarks their views on the role of woman in the industry.

Since its inception in 2010, Green Giraffe has worked on over 294 key energy transition projects in over 67 countries.
