Green Giraffe was mandated in 2016 by developer Trident Winds, alongside Bostonia Partners, to raise development equity for the Morro Bay floating offshore wind project in California. In February 2016, Trident Winds submitted an unsolicited lease request to the US federal Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM) for the development of a 650-1,000 MW offshore wind project with a grid connection in Morro Bay, CA. In September 2016, BOEM announced a competitive leasing process with an auction following identification of Wind Energy Areas off the coast of California.
In June 2018, EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG (EnBW) entered into a joint venture with Trident Winds for the development of offshore wind, starting in California. The newly established joint venture will focus on obtaining the site lease from BOEM and on securing the grid connection that became available following the shutdown of the Morro Bay power plant in February 2014.
